Mexico Moves to Resume Oil Shipments to Cuba

(MENAFN) Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum declared Wednesday her administration will maintain petroleum shipments to Cuba despite mounting American opposition, framing the policy as a sovereign humanitarian commitment rooted in the nation's diplomatic traditions.

Speaking at a National Palace media briefing, Sheinbaum emphasized the deliveries reflect Mexico's longstanding foreign policy principles, characterizing oil transfers as autonomous national decisions beyond external influence.

The shipments occur through formal agreements between state energy giant Petroleos Mexicanos (Pemex) and a Cuban government entity, representing Mexico's humanitarian assistance to the island nation, Sheinbaum explained. Pemex determines delivery schedules based on contractual obligations, she noted.

Sheinbaum confronted recent conjecture suggesting Mexico had yielded to U.S. demands for halting petroleum flows, speculation triggered following a media report indicating a January shipment suspension.

"I never said anything about whether it had been suspended ... That was a later interpretation based on a newspaper article," the president stated, rejecting claims of any official policy reversal.

Though Sheinbaum reaffirmed Mexico's humanitarian dedication to Cuba, she withheld specifics regarding whether forthcoming deliveries would contain crude oil, indicating such determinations rest on bilateral arrangements between both countries.
