Trump Says Cuba on Verge of Collapse

(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump issued a stark warning Friday that Cuba is on the verge of collapse, while signaling that his administration remains locked in on the active war with Iran before turning its full attention to Havana.

Speaking in a phone interview with media, Trump indicated he intends to dispatch Secretary of State Marco Rubio to spearhead any eventual engagement with Cuba, saying: "They want to make a deal, and so I'm going to put Marco (Rubio) over there and we'll see how that works out."

Trump made clear, however, that Tehran remains the immediate priority, adding: "We're really focused on this one right now. We've got plenty of time, but Cuba's ready -- after 50 years."

The remarks follow comments Trump made Thursday, in which he declared it is only a "question of time before" people go back to Cuba — signalling growing confidence within the administration that the island nation's government is buckling.

Cuba has been in the grip of a deepening economic and energy crisis since Washington forcibly detained Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro on Jan. 3, a move that severely disrupted Havana's critical oil supplies flowing from both Venezuela and Mexico.

Meanwhile, the United States and Israel have continued to intensify their coordinated military campaign against Iran, which was launched on Feb. 28 and resulted in the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, alongside senior military commanders and civilians.
